Federal court security officer heads into retirement

Good afternoon and welcome to the first edition of the newsletter for 2024.

A total of 258 tornado-affected applicants were awarded grant funding from a pool of donations the city of Little Rock collected in the aftermath of the March 31 disaster.

According to Mollie Palmer, an official with Heart of Arkansas United Way, $425,000 in grants was distributed along with Visa gift cards with a total value of $30,000. The gift cards were originally meant to serve as a covid-19 vaccine incentive.

Heart of Arkansas United Way coordinated the distribution process in exchange for $50,000.

A Little Rock police officer working off-duty at the Walmart Supercenter on Baseline Road shot and killed a man armed with a knife on New Year's Eve.

According to the Police Department, Officer Kreshun King Sr. shot 30-year-old Benjamin McDaniel of Austin after a fight in which McDaniel cut King's hand with the knife, Remington Miller and Grant Lancaster reported.

King has been placed on administrative leave. He has worked for the department since 2017 and was suspended for 80 hours without pay in November following an internal investigation.
