🗣️ NB2A: Black-Owned Breweries Are Growing Based on Craft’s Original Playbook

While craft finished 2023 in decline, Black-owned craft breweries were able to grow, according to National Black Brewers Association (NB2A) executive director Kevin Asato in a press conference Wednesday during the Craft Brewers Conference in Las Vegas.

More specific numbers on Black-owned breweries’ sales and impact will be released next month, but Asato gave a preview of what to expect from the report, including that Black-owned craft breweries are consistently outperforming both the overall craft segment and total beer.

💰 FX Matt Acquires A Spirits-Based Canned Cocktail Company

FX Matt Brewing Company has made another strategic acquisition, this time in the spirits category.

The acquired ready-to-drink canned cocktail (RTD) brand will be a part of Right Coast Spirits, a joint venture between FX Matt, Flying Dog (which FX Matt acquired in 2023) and Mass Bay Brewing-owned Harpoon Brewery. The JV’s portfolio also includes Right Coast Vodka Whips and Margarita Whips, as well as Right Coast Italian Ice, a vodka-based RTD launched in two flavors earlier this month.

Boston Beer CEO Michael Spillane spoke to analysts and investors Thursday in the company’s Q1 earnings call – Spillane’s first since taking over for David Burwick just a few weeks ago. 

Spillane shared the company’s priorities, as well as his own as CEO, and plans for supporting both innovation and Boston Beer’s core brands, which include Twisted Tea, Truly Hard Seltzer, Samuel Adams, Dogfish Head and Angry Orchard.

The Brewbound Live business conference returns December 11 and 12 in Marina del Rey, California.

Brewbound Live will feature beverage-alcohol industry leaders taking part in business-focused conversations, data presentations, networking and much more across two days at the Marina del Rey Marriott.

Brewbound announced the first speakers for this year’s conference. They include:

  • Deschutes Brewery CEO Peter Skrbek;
  • National Beer Wholesalers Association chief economist and VP of analytics Lester Jones;
  • Draftline Technologies founder and president Jennifer Hauke.
