American retirement faces many, many challenges. But amid the gloom, there's some very good news: 401(k) savings are higher than ever. That's according to a new study by Vanguard, which found that its 5 million plan participants, on average, are saving at a rate of 11.7% — the highest ever recorded.

Also this week, we asked two questions about retirement advising: How do you talk estate planning without spooking clients about their own mortality? And for long-term investments, has the risk score gained too much influence?
