The current sky-high mortgage rates and home prices may sometimes distract from another growing area of expense for the owners of residences and other assets: property taxes.

"We do remind clients that those expenses don't stop," said planner Amy Irvine of Corning, New York-based Rooted Planning Group. "So when they pay their mortgage off, they shouldn't expect all of that cash to be available going forward."
