“It just felt wrong.” After 9 months of cruelty and not ever being treated like a child by her captors, Elizabeth Smart was offered a teddy bear before reluctantly heading into being interrogated upon her rescue. She declined. It just felt wrong. At 15 years old, she was no longer a child and the thought of holding it brought no comfort. In the years since, Elizabeth has often thought “is there anything that would have made me feel more safe that day?” and “why do we have the term security blanket?”.
