New board members of the Little Rock housing authority last week toured three high-rise towers that are managed by the firm Gorman & Co.

Commissioners, housing authority staff and others visited the Cumberland Towers, Fred W. Parris Towers and Jesse Powell Towers.

Four of the five commissioners joined the housing authority's board since last September in the wake of the expulsion of then-Chair H. Lee Lindsey and then-Vice Chair Leta Anthony.

At the Parris Towers, the group got into a lengthy discussion about security at the complex. Karen Buchanan, the vice chair of the housing authority's board, argued that more issues started to arise after the high-rise was converted from senior housing and said the property should have a fence.

Gilbert "Jamie" Collins has stepped down after spending seven years as the director of the Little Rock Planning and Development Department.

Collins told Mayor Frank Scott Jr. in a letter last month that he had accepted a job in the private sector and would resign the job effective June 28.

Brad Jordan, the manager of the department's development division, has been named interim director.
