| | | | A trio of breaking news stories hit Friday, including the previously mentioned Boston Beer/Suntory rumors. Additionally, after 10 months of uncertainty, Anchor Brewing Company’s future appears to be secure. Hamdi Ulukaya, the billionaire founder and CEO of yogurt and dairy brand Chobani, acquired the craft brewery and property in San Francisco’s Potrero Hill neighborhood. The San Francisco Standard first reported the news, and Brewbound confirmed the sale. Although a sale price was not disclosed, the real estate had been listed for around $40 million. Anchor’s previous owner, Sapporo, ceased operations at the brewery last July and began a sale process for the 127-year-old craft brand’s assets. Ulukaya is the latest person to attempt to resurrect the Anchor brand, which was established in 1896. Fritz Maytag famously revived Anchor in 1965, and established Anchor Steam Beer as an iconic craft brand. Then, Athens, Georgia’s Creature Comforts announced a leadership change at the top. Co-founder Chris Herron stepped down as CEO and Adam Beauchamp was named his successor. In other news … Monster shut down operations at the Deep Ellum Brewing facility in Dallas, and will transfer brewing operations to other facilities. Twenty-five people lost their jobs due to the move. This is the third major change at a former CANarchy facility, following layoffs at the Cigar City brewery in Tampa this March and the shutdown of the Oskar Blues brewery in Austin last November. The Cigar City facility was transformed into a cross-category innovation hub. |
