The minister agreed to marry us in my mother’s living room so Steve wouldn’t have to stand up in front of “all those people.” We dressed up for the occasion, went out to dinner, and spent the night at a small country inn. One year later, with a new life and Annie making us a family, it was time to celebrate again.
The sun was warm but the hills and fields were still deeply blanketed with snow. We were moving into the little house set well back from the road and barns at the farm in the Laurentians where we would manage a flock of sheep, several chickens, and a trout pond. It was the country life we’d sought — two suburban kids escaping “real” jobs, the hustle and bustle of city life, and the noise.
