Amazing! Did you know:

***Humans need sugar! If we don’t have sugar, we die.

*** Sugar started as a medicine used to treat sore throats, stomach upset, and more – and still is today.

*** Less than 10% of the sugar we eat and calories we gain comes from candy.

Did you know: First in History:

  • The first chewing gum was made of tree resin, used clean the teeth? And that tree resin was used as the basis of most chewing gum until World War II – and is still used in chewing gums today.

  • The “honey” in the Bible actually was made of date, fig, or grape syrups, as well as honey from the bee?

  • Turkish Delight, famous from its role in Chronicles of Narnia, started as a medicine around 900 CE, became the parent to the gum drop and jellybean in the 1800s, and the gummy family of candy in the 1920s.

  • Native Americans used boiled barks, leaves and roots, among others, to get sugar.

Early U.S. History:

  • Sugar plums” as seen in the “Sugar Plum Fairy” were invented around the late 1500s and were the parent to the 1800s favorite – the Jaw Buster.

  • Many of the spices used by the Colonists, such as cinnamon, were thought to have aphrodisiac qualities (and still do today)

  • Coffee and chocolate drinks were used the Revolutionaries in place of British tea

The 1800s:

  • Circus Peanuts really were made for traveling circuses. They were so popular, they became a prototype for the Lucky Charm cereal.

  • NECCO Wafers were invented in 1847 by a pharmacist who used a lozenge cutter he had invented to shape them. About 20 years later his brother invented conversation hearts.

  • Kids chewed licorice roots as a “candy.” Many stores still carry the roots today.

The 20th Century:

  • Sour balls were an important part of the foods sent to fighters during World War II. The U.S. government sent literally tons overseas.

  • Popcorn was used as a cereal and garnish for soups and salads, among other things, in the early 1900s.

  • The candy Satellite Wafers were originally made with communion wafers. Many people still notice similarities today.
